Champion Dog Prince Tom (1958)

Champion Dog Prince Tom
Jean Fritz and Tom Clute, illustrated by Ernest Hart
1958

A small blonde spaniel sold as a pet becomes an AKC obedience champion and field trial champion.

"For sale," he read.  "Cocker spaniel puppies."
Tom let the paper fall to the floor and he looked dreamily out into Dennis Street. "That's what I'd like," he thought. "A dog."

The true story of an accomplished Cocker Spaniel named Prince, fictionalized slightly through the eyes of his owner (adult Tom Clute) and Nathan, a child who is a friend of Clute's family.

Readable, fun story of an underestimated dog and his loyal owner.  Beautiful illustrations by well-known animal/dog artist Hart.

The actual Prince Tom, surrounded by his trophies.
